Cat in pain and looking for advise.?

My cat has had 3 pins holding his back left leg together at the joint area for 10 years now and been just fine. Today he is in a lot of pain, hobbling badly and actually holding that leg off the ground when lying down. What could be wrong? I have no spare finances for this if it requires another surgery.
