Can dogs have Vanilla/Strawberry Ice Cream?

I've been feeding my 1 year old Maltese vanilla and strawberry ice cream. He loves it and it really cools him off when it's hot. After he eats it he's perfectly fine but everyone tells me that it's not safe. Should I stop?
