Sassoon "One-legged Man" Analysis?
Nor sure what you know already... Sassoon is considered to be a First World War's poet. He's talking about a soldier longing for home (a common theme is war songs and poems) but puts an uncomfortable spin on it in the closing line, to shock the reader. In one sense, we can share the soldier's gladness that he is still alive and yet we feel uncomfortable and perhaps disturbed that this man had to have a limb amputated at all. I guess the theme is idealising home (England) and longing to return. Sassoon just adds to this common theme with an image of injury. "A wounded soldier dreams of home and ironically celebrates his injury" may sum it up? Hope this helps.
